(Stolen from booktube)
I wasn’t exactly tagged, but when I saw @safifonhasstrel do this, I thought I’d try it too~
1. What is your average monthly budget for books?
I don’t currently have one, but that might be a good idea actually… if I was to set a monthly allowance I’d say about $50 aud to cover books and journals. I imagine the balance would roll over to the next month if I didn’t spend it all.
2. What is the most you’ve ever spent in a bookstore?
I don’t have a definite figure, but I’d probably say about $75 aud, which is the most I’ve ever spent in one bookstore. I have spent more than that in several bookstores over the course of one day though…
3. Are you willing to pay full price for a new release, or will you wait until you have a coupon or there’s a sale?
If it’s the next instalment in a series, I’d usually buy new release books straight away. If it’s a stand-alone novel, I’ll buy it whenever I want it.
4. Would you rather buy one new book, or several less expensive used copies?
It would be completely dependant on the circumstances. I don’t buy used books over the internet since I can’t know the quality of the book, so if I was ordering online, definitely new. If it was an in store purchase, it would really depend on the book in question.
5. What do you think is a reasonable price for a new hardcover book? A paperback? And eBook?
Depending on the length of the book, paperbacks are usually around $20 to $25 aud, and hardcovers are generally $35 aud, which I tend to think is quite reasonable. eBook’s are irrelevant to me, since I prefer to have a hard copy and will take an actual physical book over an eBook any day. What irks me more than anything about buying books is paying $25 aud for a very poorly written novel, and $20 aud for a fantastic one.
6. Is a signed book worth more to you? What about a first edition?
Again, it really depends! First edition is a definite yes, but signed? I’ll take it or leave it, unless it’s a personal favourite. That being said, if I could get a signed copy of Pride and Prejudice it would become my most valued possession.
7. What is your most valuable book (sentimental or actual value)?
I don’t own any books that would be valuable in a monetary sense, but I do own several which are of deep sentimental value. Most are books that were given to me as a child, including several of my beautiful Kate DiCamillo novels, as well as my hardcover copy of the complete works of Beatrix Potter.
8. Will you pay more for a cover or edition you like better?
Absolutely. I like my books, new or old, to be aesthetically pleasing. My current biggest gripe about my bookshelf is that none of my copies of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series have matching covers.
9. What physical characteristics does a good quality book have?
To me, whether or not a book is ‘good quality’ doesn’t necessarily depend on whether it’s old and frayed, or shiny and new. It depends on how well it reads. But to speak purely of the physical characteristics; as mentioned above, old or new, I like my books to look nice. A book can certainly be well worn, or have loose pages, and still be nice in my opinion. But a book that has been scribbled in for no particular reason? That to me is a definite no.
10. If you won the lottery, what bookish things would you do with money?
Selflessly? I would donate books to hospitals and foster care homes, fund reading programs for schools in third-world countries, and build libraries at said schools so the children could further their reading.
Selfishly? I would further my book collection and build myself a home library.
11. BONUS: Give an image (actual or mental) of your dream home library!
If I tried to find an actual image it could take all day, so I’ll opt for a description: picture a large room, with dark wooden floors covered in rugs and carpets, filled wall to wall with built in shelves of all my favourite books, classic and modern literature alike. Scattered throughout would be many comfortable armchairs and couches (each equipped with extra cushions and blankets), side tables to hold notebooks or hot beverages, and reading lamps. Ideally there would be a fireplace too, and at least one bay window with sweeping drapes tied back to let in the sun.
I won’t tag anyone in particular, but I would love to see any and all book lovers give this a go ❤︎
